Cal Bailey, sustainability director

Across NG Bailey, we always aim to live our values of passion, integrity and excellence. This means working in partnership with our customers, staff, suppliers and communities to act as a driver for positive change that brings social and environmental benefits and makes NG Bailey a more profitable business.

The spaces we create affect the everyday lives of millions of people, and thousands of organisations, in the UK.

Embracing sustainability in our business means we can have a far reaching impact and positively influence the environmental and social sustainability of the UK’s built environment.

It also underpins our own economic sustainability. We have £80m net assets and are proud to say we have no borrowings. That coupled with a fantastic reputation for excellence is a unique blend of strengths which puts us on an ideal platform for growth.

NG Bailey designs, installs and maintains the engineering, IT and facilities services that bring public and private sector buildings to life.  As the built environment is responsible for 40 per cent of UK’s emissions climate change clearly has major implications for our business. While our industry is not singularly responsible for this impact we have a moral obligation to take action.

Taking action on climate change not only benefits the environment and wider society, it also helps our bottom line.  Every tonne of CO2 or waste that we avoid means we save money. We own most of the premises we occupy and use them to learn lessons that we can take to our customers who demand excellent buildings that cost less to construct and operate. Continuous development of our skills in designing, contstructing and operating low carbon buildings presents a great business opportunity.

Over the last twelve months we have had some notable successes:

  • We have reduced our carbon footprint by 13 per cent cumulatively compared to our baseline year (2008)
  • We won two awards for the development of our eco-friendly site cabins
  • We implemented a GPS system into our mobile engineer fleet, reducing journey distances
  • We reduced our water consumption by five per cent compared to our baseline year
  • Our North West logistics centre has collected site waste, re-issued what can be used, sorted the rest, saving £246,000 in its inaugural year.

However, while we are proud of our successes, sustainability is a continuous journey that demands we make continuing progress towards implementing ever increasing changes that deliver positive social and environmental impacts and greater economic value for NG Bailey.

Communicating transparently with our stakeholders, such as our customers, staff and the communities we operate in, is an important part of our continuing drive towards sustainability within NG Bailey. Since 2007 NG Bailey has been reporting on its sustainability performance and progress and for the last two years our reports have been aligned to the Global Reporting Initiative so that we can ensure that readers are presented with a rounded view of sustainability in our business.
